The Beginner's Guide to Bankroll Management

The most common reason sports bettors lose money isn't because they can't pick winners—it's because they lack bankroll management. Without a disciplined approach to how much you wager, a single losing streak can wipe out your entire account.

What is a Bankroll?

Your bankroll is a dedicated sum of money set aside specifically for sports betting. This should be money you can afford to lose, completely separate from your rent, groceries, or savings. By treating it as a separate investment fund, you remove the emotional stress of "needing" to win to pay bills.

The 1% - 5% Rule

Professional bettors rarely wager more than 1% to 2% of their total bankroll on a single game. Even the most aggressive strategies rarely exceed 5%.

  • Conservative (1%): Minimal risk. Great for beginners or those with a small edge.
  • Moderate (2-3%): Standard for experienced bettors.
  • Aggressive (5%): High risk. Only for highly confident wagers or very large edges.

Why this matters:

If you bet 20% of your bankroll per game, a 5-game losing streak (which happens to everyone) puts you at $0. If you bet 2%, that same streak only costs you 10% of your bankroll, leaving you plenty of room to recover.
